How To Choose a Ski Resort in Japan?
If you’re looking for the perfect winter getaway, it’s hard to go past Japan. It’s an awesome opportunity to experience a country steeped in culture, while also enjoying some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the world. It’s a fantastic destination for a snow holiday - whether you’re a first timer or an experienced pro.
But with so many resorts to choose from (close to 500), how do you decide which one is right for you? First up, it’s important to know what you want from your snow holiday. Are you the super adventurous type, keen to get off the beaten track and experience traditional Japanese food and accommodation, or would you prefer luxury western accommodation and the guarantee of a good burger and shiraz at the end of a day on the mountain? Are you a fair-weather skier who prefers après over first tracks, or a powder loving backcountry expert? There’s no right or wrong, just what works for you and all of these factors will influence which resort is the perfect one for your snow holiday.
Some things to consider:
How important is travel time to the resort?
What is your budget?
What style and standard of accommodation is important to you?
Do you have any special requirements (e.g., self-catering, meals, location)?
Do you want a village vibe or ski in ski out (or both)?
Are you happy out of your comfort zone communicating with translation apps and charades?
What type of food do you and your crew like to eat? How important are western options?
Do you have anyone in your group who doesn’t ski?
How crucial is access to ski school, babysitting, etc?
